A few words …and a shrug along the way…

Barley

… a type of cereal grain … a versatile grain used in cereal, various health food, animal feed and alcoholic beverages


… barley is available in various forms, and not all are considered whole grain

hulled barley and pot/scotch barley are considered whole grain

… the more familiar pearl barley is not considered a whole grain, due to the degrees of processing it has endured

barley flakes and barley grits may or may not be whole grain – depends on whether it was made from hulled barley or pearl barley

… great source of dietary fibre, selenium, minerals and niacin, a B vitamin … also medically proven to help lower cholestrol and heart desease

… it’s great in soups and stews … I also like adding a handful to my (side-dish of) rice – adds a lovely third dimension

Aha, my mum gave me a bag of barley the other day and I was wondering what to do with it. I might add it to rice as you suggested.

Hi Trace...it's great in soups and stews too. Here's another favourite of mine 'Easy Beef and Vegetable Soup' -- perfect for this 'sad' cold weather we've been having!

p/s...I'm good thanks, just procrastinate too much to blog... ;- & amongst other things... Trust all's well in your household =)

One of the few things I cook is a vegetable soup with barley, I think it makes it more substantial.

Other than that I don't suppose I eat much barley. Does barley sugar count, Lara?

I have a bag of barley just waiting to be used, as well. It never occurred to me to try cooking it with rice.
