An easy step-by-step recipe for a yummy homemade pizza!
Pizzas can be a healthy choice especially when it’s homemade with good wholesome ingredients. From a simple Margherita to a more gourmet choice, pizzas are fairly quick and simple to do but do require some planning.
Here’s a recipe for the (all important) dough and topping suggestions to suit your palate.
Part 1: The Dough
What you need:
180g plain flour – makes one pizza, depending how thick or thin you want it
1 tablespoon of salt
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 tablespoon of yeast
120ml of warm water
What to do:
1…Mix all the ingredients together. Blend well with the warm water.
2..Remove dough from bowl and knead well for a few minutes.
3…Put kneaded dough into a large clean dry bowl and cling-wrap. Leave for at least two hours. You’ll notice a bit of moisture on the wrap as the dough breathes and rises.
…after 2 hours…
4…Remove the risen dough from the bowl.
5…Sprinkle some flour on your bench-top and dust some on your hands too. Use a rolling pin and roll out the dough to your desired thinness or thickness. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try using your fingers to shape it to a flat disc, and then start pulling, stretching and turning the disc in the air to make the dough thinner (and thinner)! After which, you place the thin dough on your floured bench-top, and use your flour-dusted fingertips to flat out the thick spots by pushing the dough to the outside.
Part 2: Toppings
What to do:
1…Pre-heat oven to 180C/355F
2…Place base on a pizza ban oiled with olive oil
3…Generously spread tomato paste on pizza base
4...Sprinkle/spread your desired toppings on top
5…Bake for 15-20 minutes. Serve while hot.
6...Buon appetito!
Topping Suggestions:
Vegetarian
A bottle of tomato paste
6 mushrooms sliced
A handful of olives pitted and sliced
Basil – roughly shredded
Napoli
A bottle of tomato paste
6 pieces of anchovies – roughly chopped
A handful of olives pitted and sliced
Caprese
A bottle of tomato paste
6 slices of Prosciutto – roughly shredded
6 mushrooms sliced
Tips…
…if you're not watching your diet, you may like to add some Mozzarella cheese to the topping
…if you don’t have a rolling pin, just use a 1-2 litre bottle to roll it out, works just as well
...in terms of toppings, with *real* pizzas (as compared to some commercial pizzas), less is more...
