What's Your Favourite Cheapest Kitchen Gadget?
May 28th 2009 07:50
I love gadgets, particularly kitchen gadgets that can be very helpful…if you’ve the right ones. Hence, the purpose of this post – favourite cheapest kitchen gadget and how it has been useful.
I’ll start…
Gio's favourite cheapest kitchen gadget is the silicone spatula – AU$2-13, depending on the brand (or no brand). The flexibility of the silicone makes it easy to use from spreading, smoothing to scraping, and is also very easy to wash.
What’s your favourite cheapest kitchen gadget, and why?

The microplane is the absolute best because it grates anything finely and cleanly. I use it to zest citrus, grate cheese, and ginger, which I keep frozen. I've never done it but I imagine it would grate vanilla bean well too.
I love my silicone brushes and baking stuff (cake pan, muffin pan, baking sheet). They're easy to clean and store, and you don't need to grease them!

My favourite kitchen gadget it my olive spoon. It cost around A$6 and is just like a mini ladle with holes in the bottom. You scoop your olives out of the jar and the brine drains out of the holes - it is fantastic!

I like those tupperware gadgets you get from garage sales. Of course I think most of its free if you manage to get into a tup party. Anyhow, those rubber grips are the best way to unscrew a stubborn bottle cap!
Cheers.

I've got that too, Helen! It's great to use with capers too

What did we do before the squeezer, Morgan? Otherwise, I seem to always twirl the string around the spoon too hard, and the string/teabag breaks <lol>.
Anon... yea, those Tupp freebies are fab! My sister and I bought some on eBay -- just to *complete* the collection <giggle>. I too love that rubber grip

You know I saw this post a while ago and I searched all over google looking for a picture of my *Muddle,* which together with my super dooper fangled vege peeler are my two favourites.
What*s a muddle?
Well traditionally it is a wooden stick type thingi, but mine has this end on it that looks like a moulded juicer. it is used to extract all the juice from ctrus fruits when cooking by holding the fruit in one hand and twisting the muddle into it with the other.
I will take a picture one day and show you, I just havn't got the time atm.
I enjoyed this post btw.

But my short handled wooden spoon - about $4- just rocks.
My silicone ended spatual kix butt. Probably about $10-
And my $3- extended lighter has saved many rushed pullbacks from the match setting the gas stove on.

BTW...how do you post a picture in the comment box? I've never been able to figure it out... I don't have the image icon when posting comments.
Jason...great stuff! I know how you feel about using matches on a stove -- don't know what I'd do without the 'extended lighter' either...!

That*s odd because the comments box is for me, exactly like a *creating Post* layout with all the *buttons* at the top of the screen. The *attach picture* icon on the top right hand side of the row of *buttons* . . the procedure is the same, but you must be careful to make sure you never use a full size picture as it can go off the screen. . . I can remember it used to make all the writing wander off the right of the screen too if a picture was included int he comments on 400 (full size). I always aim at about 300 or 75% or less.
Maybe you should write to charles@orble.com and ask him why its not coming up on your comments screen? Charles is a whizz at handling all that technical stuff.
As for my trusty muddle, you are quite right, especially for limes in Majeto*s (pronounced Maheetoes)... oh yah!
Good luck sorting it out.
