Top 5 Useless Kitchen Gadgets

June 21st 2009 10:39
As you might know, I love gadgets, and kitchen gadgets are on my list of toys that I like. Naturally, I’ve been a *victim* of those at-that-minute-seemed like-a-great-tool moments which have reaped tools that sometimes turned out to be not too useful in the kitchen.

My top 5 useless kitchen gadgets:

multigrater mincer kitchen tool cooking

1…The Multi Grater – which claims to make grating quick and easy was nothing but a nuisance! It grated OK but whatever you were grating gets stuck more than fall out of the grate.

egg separator kitchen tool cooking

2…The Egg Separator – supposedly helps me to separate the white from the yolk. The gap is always too wide or too narrow... I found using the shells much quicker and effective. It was however, great fun to play with as a kid.

3…Garlic Gadgets – whether the claims are: peel, slice, grate, mince or whatever…I’ve never found any of it to work well!

egg rings kitchen gadget cooking

4…Egg Rings – whoever insisted we need cooked eggs perfectly round?

wine spout pourer stopper kitchen-tool

5…The Wine Spout – it claims to stop wine from *dribbling* down the side of the bottle. OK, it sort of does, but it drips off the spout! I’ve not used it again since trying it out twice.

These are on the way to a local charity...

What useless kitchen gadget(s) do you have lying around?

I'm ashamed to say that I was seduced into purchasing the Slap Chop. I watched the infomercial late one night and thought, "I must have that!!!" I have used it ONCE! But this pitch really sold me on the thing! I have to say that I get a lot of use out of the "Graty" that came with it!

<lol> He was very convincing though, Natalina. That's why I've been restrained from watching infomercials -- they're just too darn persuasive <lol>. At least the 'Graty' is useful.

I love most of my gadgets - I would say my grater is frigging useless - it has the handle on the side and like you everything gets stuck in it - I bought a hand grater that is much more efficient. I do like egg rings though - I always wanted square ones the same size as my toast

Orble really gets all types, don't they?

My most useless kitchen gadget would have to be a melon baller, which I "won" at a tupperware party. It makes me laugh as it's a reminder that I actually got coerced into going to a tupperware party so I'm keeping it!

WOW - absinth should get off the absinthe. One person's trash is another person's treasure

Jason...I love most of my gadgets but these just don't quite make the mark <lol>. The egg rings are cute and I think work well if you like eggs sunny side up...?

Doesn't it, Journeywoman?

I almost put my melon baller on the list! Then thought I haven't really tried using it so...

I wonder where absinth's comment went...
I was about to say that, Jason! At least the charity shop can get some money from my *garbage*

Well, I can't say I've fallen for this one, but I do have a veggie juicer which now doesn't get much use, too hard to clean and set up.

But it is good, really I should start the juicing again, it's good for me.

Hi Lara,

I think practically everything I put my hand up for when my parents were moving Really Long Link has proved to be useless - well that is, I haven't had a shot at playing with it yet!!

My other useless appliance is a chocolate fountain. It was an engagement present a number of years back and we haven't ever taken it out of the box.

Natalina - I have to say I passed on a very similar gadet to the slap chop which my parents had in the cupboard - though theirs was orange and I suspect it was a throwback from the 70s. My dad used to use it for onions.

I'm pretty sure they threw it out when they moved.

I love my egg rings; they make it easier to cook more eggs in the one fry pan! hehe

Lara, I'm a cooking man and I spent most of my time in the kitchen. Well, I've wasted over thousands of dollars for the kitchen gadgets, but 50% of the gadgets are rubbish!

A juicer, katyzzz...nice Yep...start juicing again.

Hand-me-downs can be rather useless, huh, Helen. Though I do find that sometimes they're better made. A chocolate fountain! You should try it at least once...could be fun

Wow...another vote for useful egg rings. Maybe I'm not using it *right* <lol>. Thanks for popping in Mau-Medellin.

It's difficult to say 'no' to kitchen gadgets, huh, Wilson. It's always set-out to look so useful!
